The Theme of Tolerance in To Kill A Mockingbird
By Webster’s dictionary tolerance is defined as opinions differing from one’s own. I didn’t really understand that so I’ll tell you what I think it means. To me tolerance is accepting someone or something for what it stands for. Without tolerance there would be non-stop violence and hatred. Tolerance plays a big part in our, because gays, lesbians and other minorities can express how they feel in public. The freedom of speech deals with a lot of tolerance especially with anarchists, freedom haters and people who just hate. With it we have established civilization and became what is known as a tolerant society.
The author establishes the theme of tolerance using scout as unreliable narrator. Scout is an unreliable narrator because she is just a little kid and she is about six years old, which means she has a different point of view, sees everything different and doesn’t understand everything from adults and young adults. An example would be; when Atticus asks Scout “Do you know what a compromise means?” and she says “Bending the law”, and Atticus says “No, a compromise is an agreement reached by mutual concessions”. In the quote you can see that she doesn’t understand that’s why she is an unreliable narrator.
In the book one of the main characters goes by the name of “Scout.” She is a very strong and tolerant little girl. She shows tolerance by growing up in a household with no mother and having only her brother Jem, her father Atticus, and her nanny Calpurnia. She spent most of her time with her brother Jem and hadn’t been growing up around someone who could teach her how to be lady like. She grew older dressing in overalls and tomboyish. The next character in this book that show’s everything but tolerance is Mrs. Dubouse, Mrs. Dubouse shows no tolerance at all but also by observing the situation you can learn about tolerance. Without tolerance you yell at and judge other people like Mrs. Dubouse does. You say something she doesn’t like and she’ll go crazy on you.
Another character that the author uses to establish the theme of tolerance is Mrs. Dubose. Mrs. Dubose is a sick old lady who appears to be mean with Jem. That’s the time when Jem throws Mrs. Dubose’s garden and Mrs. Dubose instead tells him to clean up the garden and “She wants me to read her out loud for two hours for a month” Jem said to Atticus. In this quote we see that Mrs. Dubose doesn’t punish Jem very badly and uses tolerance with Jem.
Our last choice of character would have to be Atticus. Atticus shows very much tolerance I think, with his children, the Robinson case, the racist people such as Mr. Yule and his friends. Atticus is helping Tom Robinson with his case and gains a lot of disrespect from the Yule’s and his friends, but even thought he gets treated poorly by them he does not do anything because no matter what he does he cannot change the way the feel or act’s definitely think tolerance is a big thing; if we didn’t have such a thing then this whole world would probably be one big riot, where everyone would hate each other. Where people wouldn’t accept you for who you are aside from who they would like u to be or how they would want you to act. Just because you’re not like them doesn’t mean that you should be treated as if you were a bad person or piece of dirt.

The author establishes the theme of tolerance with Boo Radley by Boo tolerating Jem for getting into his backyard instead when Jem goes back to find his pants he had left stuck in the fence he found them folded and sewed.
